Last week I stopped by a nice coffee shop here in SW Austin with my daughter, a friend and her two kids. My daughter (Peyton) ran straight to the display case that housed a beautiful display of Macaroons in a array of different colors. Peyton got excited and says to me, "Mama can I have one? " So of course, you know how we are as parents with kids who have severe food allergies.....I started asking questions!! It turned out that they couldn't guarantee that there wouldn't be cross contamination, plus they had one made out of pistachios . So, I look down at Peyton and I have to tell her she can't eat the Macaroons. I see the disappointment in her eyes, and she starts to cry and say..."I hate having food allergies!!" I comfort my daughter in that moment and explain to her that your are special, you are one of a kind.....and this is how God made you. I tell her we will figure it out, and Mommy will find you a bakery/coffee shop that will make Macaroons that are safe for you to eat.
Now I'm on the hunt for food allergy friendly bakeries and coffee shops in the Austin area.....stay tuned to see what I find.
